With this year’s Employee Engagement Summit just a few weeks away, we’ve decided to sit down with some of our world class industry speakers for a “Speaker in the Spotlight” interview to hear more about their role, responsibilities and what they are most looking forward to about the event. Today we are joined by Fernando Zallocco, HR Director at Boehringer Ingelheim…

1. Can you provide us with an insight into a ‘day in the life’ of your role?

As a big number of people all over the world I have been working from home since mid-March, 2020. The day starts with some at home exercise. I use an app on my phone. Then jointly with my wife we coordinate to getting up the kids – I have two! One is now 4 (Felipe) and the elder one is 7 (Ignacio), giving them breakfast and connecting them to the virtual classes. Then the working started which is very much full of TEAMS virtual meetings. I very much enjoy – and per my role – connecting with people but I shall also admit that some virtual fatigue impacted me sometime. I also have to admit that  I miss the personal connection that the in-person interactions bring. Resolving the urgent, recalculating processes and priorities while building perspective together with the teams summarize almost all the actions and decisions taken.

2. How has Covid affected your workplace and your workforce?

The most relevant and visible impact is that most of us are working from home since last year and all our interactions moved to a virtual landscape. That significantly impacted the way we work together but the high level of engagement we have remained or even improved. We have intensively worked together to adapt to this new reality now working from home and dealing with different realities. Living and learning to deal with this new context imposed a significant challenge that we are learning every day.

3. What do you think the future will look like for employee engagement and the workforce?

I see that a hybrid model of work is now here to stay. How it will looks like I just do not know as the context keeps changing and evolving. Someone told if the context changes, then the text changes. What an amazing perspective. This hybrid model certainly connects with more flexibility but also with more discipline for addressing the different demands of our lives (which working represents an important amount of time). A great learning journey already started!

4. What do you think are the key takeaways from the last year in employee engagement?

There are lot of learnings and takeaways from last year in terms of engagement. I would like to stress three of them:  The first one – listen to your people more. For us the dialogue is crucial for a an engaged workforce and despite we thought we have a significant dialogue we realized that maybe we were not doing it enough. The second one – connect with the organization feeling. This is about addressing the individual realities and the organization as whole. The third – prioritize, recalculate and act based on active listening and understanding the organization feeling.

5. What are you most looking forward to about the event?

Sharing, sharing and more sharing. I see the event as a great opportunity to take a pause for nurturing our minds, opening for new learnings, insights and of course new possibilities for a better world of work.
