Skype founders invent grocery delivering robots
With their new company Starship Technologies, Skype founders Ahti Heinla and Janus Friis have created autonomous rovers that drive on sidewalks and carry packages at an average speed of 4mph.
The robots are designed to deliver two grocery bags worth of goods in 5-30 minutes for “10-15 times less than the cost of current last-mile delivery alternatives.”
Starship says that that the robots will be 99% autonomous, which means that they will be self-driving but humans will have to supervise their activity to ensure their security and effectiveness.
“Our vision revolves around three zeroes,” says Ahti Heinla, CEO at Starship Technologies, “zero cost, zero waiting time, and zero environmental impact.”
The robots are electric, making them eco-friendly.
