Secret office eaters consume half daily calorie allowance on snacks every day! A recent survey has revealed that 72% of office workers are consuming roughly 50% of their daily calorie allowance on unhealthy office snacks such as biscuits and chocolate.
As an obesity epidemic hits the UK, here at Kit Out My Office we’re calling for more companies to provide healthy snacks for their workers.
The survey results showed that women in the workplace generally consumed 43% more calories through snacking than men. Furthermore, 58% of women are more likely to hide their eating habits from their significant other, compared to only 32% of men. Obesity has been linked to a lower office productivity and a multitude of health issues leading to sick days, so providing healthy snacks for your employees can help your business.
Luke Hughes, Managing Director of Origym & Qualified nutritionist said: “Snacking in itself is not a bad thing. In fact, professional athletes and bodybuilders opt for eating regularly throughout the day, before and after workouts, as opposed to concentrating on three main meals.”
“The problem many people have with snacking both arises from the lack of planning, and the convenience of typical “snack” foods. When you’re planning your meals, you should opt for protein-heavy snacks that supplement the foods you would eat for main meals. Examples include chicken breasts, falafel, and carrots with a side of hummus.”
“With this planning, you won’t have to turn to processed carbohydrates and sugars that are found in typical “office snacks” like muffins, pastries, chocolate, and crisps. It is these foods that our bodies crave on impulse, as the sugar gives us a serotonin boost. However, they are in fact bad for our health, especially when consumed on a regular basis.”
