Calling all communicators: so how do you plan?
Communicators’ love-hate relationship with planning is the subject of the opening keynote presentation at Engage Employee’s 2020 Internal Communications virtual event in September. And you can help keynote speaker, author Liam FitzPatrick research the current state of the art.
Liam is asking communicators around the world to complete a short survey that asks about how they approach planning – the study survey can be found here.
Liam explains that he has long been interested in what prevents communicators – both IC and PR – from having consistent approaches to developing strategy and following a structured path for campaigns.
“We often hear from research that a large proportion of communicators are willing to admit to do no planning at all – which probably suggests that a bigger number are neglecting it but are unwilling to own up to it!”
What intrigues Liam is why that might be the case.
“I’ve often wondered if it’s a lack of interest” he explains “after all, a lot of us are motivated by action in the moment or we work in situations that are very fast moving.”
The survey explores what types of strategies organisations develop, how they relate to wider business priorities and how they are integrated across comms functions. Communicators are also asked about stakeholder involvement and the specific items that get included in a plan. Importantly, the research will look at what stops people developing plans and seeing them through.
Responses are being collected until mid -July and analysis will be complete in time for the conference in September. Already several hundred professionals around the world have taken part but Liam would like to see an even bigger response.
“This is a real opportunity to share good practice and understand the barriers to our profession’s development – the more individuals who take part, the more robust our findings” he says.
Liam is collaborating with software specialist ICPlan.com in conducting the research. A donation of $1 per completed response has been pledged to MSF’s Covid Appeal as an added incentive and survey participants can also register to receive a copy of the final report when they have completed the survey.
Our 2020 Internal Communications digital conference takes place on September 24/25 and Liam will be presenting the opening keynote address on the morning of September 24.
