Symon Garfield, Industry Digital Strategist Microsoft delves into his role and all things employee engagement at Microsoft. Symon’s role focuses on digital transformation, sustainability and financial services.

During the pandemic, Microsoft were keen to share their own experience and provide answers for those adapting to remote working. Pre pandemic, Microsoft often worked remotely so were able to offer an insight for those making the change. Symon assisted those in the financial service sector by finding ways to close their branches whilst still providing efficient customer service.

Symon defines employee engagement as: “A construct that consists of cognitive, emotions and behavioural characteristics”, Microsoft aim to have their employees invested with their heads and hearts.

Symon goes on to explain how technology can aid employee engagement, some of these ways are:

  • maintaining customer, employee and organisational relationships.
  • Enabling flexible working and a work life balance
  • Opportunities for innovation and learning.

Symon considers himself an ‘engaged’ employee at Microsoft because he can work when, where and how he wants, as Microsoft focus on measuring output rather than input.
