Keeping connected at UNICEF

John Townsend, Head of Internal Communications at UNICEF tells us how the world’s leading organisation for children manages employee engagement since the pandemic. John is responsible for keeping his 400 UK staff connected with UNICEF’S global employees.
With the pandemic moving employees’ offices to their own home, UNICEF realised they “had to up their game digitally” to ensure employees felt connected from a far.
UNICEF kept connected with; online ‘tea drop ins’, randomised online conversations to replicate the office corridor, online away days and an online end of year party.
John stresses the importance of employee wellbeing and how this was improved by focusing on: “the more human we can make things, the more we can celebrate the important moments”. UNICEF used tools such as ‘Wellbots’, mental health first aiders and a ‘take two for you’ scheme offering employees a 2-hour lunch break once a week.
