Susana Kubu, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead at Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, takes us on a journey of five ways to make your organisation more inclusive.

Susana outlines that as humans we tend to go to a space that is most comfortable and easiest. However, to move forward with D&I effectively, taking small (potentially uncomfortable) steps is how we become brave enough to challenge ourselves further.

Here are the steps Tottenham took for a more inclusive organisation:

  1. Planning – Every department/location pose their own challenges when it comes to improving inclusivity, creating an overarching plan, but focusing on individuality was integral to their success.
  2. Communication – As a large organisation, Tottenham found one of the biggest hurdles was being able to communicate the right message, to the right people, at the right time, to create the biggest impact.
  3. Data – They found data was the key to making informed to decisions whilst creating detailed action plans.
  4. Collaboration – Tottenham worked with external providers who put them under impartial scrutiny, with more rigorous guidelines than their own, to maintain standards.
  5. People Power – People are the most powerful resource. Without the support, energy and expertise of your workforce, initiatives and projects will never get off the ground.
